Hi HB

Happened to me once - it was the alternator belt had snapped. When I looked at it from the back it appeared OK but when I crawled into the engine and tugged on it - it came away in my hand.

It just so happens that in my case the alternator had seized when some road-salt had got into the internals and really wrecked it good and proper.

Itchyfeet were going to get me on at about £250 direct from the States but in the event I had to go to TravelWorld who had one on the shelf but at twice the price!

Check terminals on the back of alternator have had a few with bad connections, if not give Ross a call in the morning would need to know if its cummins or cat im sure we have cummins.

PS our prices are always fair.

Hi Ron hope you are recovering ok!

I was told never to start my Monaco while on hook up as it will knacker the alternator!

Anyone know if this is true or not?

I believe in the US they sometimes drive along in very hot weather with the generator running to run the AC???

Would this not be the same thing??

Or is it a hertz/cycles thing IE the difference between hookup and generator output??

Regards Pat

Oh christ pat your getting technical now if its on mains power and you start it up the alt light comes on i learnt this along time ago but i think that if you put the genny on when your travelling i think the generator takes priority im gona give steves gang a ring in the morning i cant see it can being kaput allready there are acouple of fuses on top of the alternator i think or there is a relay in the drivers side locker but knowing my luck !!hoping to see you over valentines w/end

Pat and Ron I can't see what difference it makes staring the engine while on hookup, the engine battery is not connected to the leisure batteries so why should it affect the charging system.
On RVs 2001 onwards you can start the generator whilst hooked up,the automatic change over switch then gives the generator priority over shore power and hands it back when the generator stops and as Pat says in the States they run the generator whilst driving to operate the air conditioners so this is identical to being hooked up only difference is the generator is providing the power and not the post.
My guess is the voltage regulator is sticking,I can't see the alternator belt being broke as you would have known that when you parked it up.
Hope you get better after your op Ron :D

Hi Colin how are you, fully mobile now???

On my Monaco I'm sure that both the house and chassis batteries are charged whilst on hookup so that may be the probable cause of possible alternator damage!!

Anyway the well known font of all RV knowledge DP told me about the possible problem so I will continue to err on the side of caution and not risk it!ImageImage

Best wishes to yourself and Hazel see you next monthImageImage

When I first had my RV I was told that I could supplement the Hook-up by using the genny at the same time. Result - knackered genny - I suppose the automatic change-over switch was not working.

Since then I have rigidly stuck to the rule of not starting the engine or the genny whilst on hook-up and (even if I am supposed to be protected by that switch) I am not going to risk it again!
